5. Unloading: After the dwell time elapses, the major load is removed while the minor load is still maintained. The minor load prevents the indenter from bouncing back or affecting the test results during unloading.
6. Measurement and Reading: The depth of indentation created by the indenter is then measured using a gauge or a dial indicator. The Rockwell hardness scale uses a numerical readout system, allowing for precise and consistent measurements.
7. Hardness Calculation: Based on the depth of penetration obtained, the Rockwell hardness value is calculated using a standardized chart or formula.
