Annealed Inconel 718: Understanding the Initial Microstructure

Metallographic Examination of Inconel 718

For nickel-based superalloys such as Inconel 718, metallographic examination of the annealed condition provides an important reference for subsequent processing and heat treatment.

Evaluating the initial microstructure helps assess grain uniformity, abnormal grain growth, inclusions, and potential metallurgical defects. Reliable sample preparation is essential for obtaining a suitable surface for microstructural examination and supporting consistent quality control before subsequent aging treatments.

TROJAN Sample Preparation Procedure

  1. Initial grinding: P400 abrasive paper
  2. Fine grinding: P800 → P2000 → P4000
  3. Coarse polishing: YS-JP polishing cloth + 3 μm PD-WT diamond polishing suspension
  4. Final polishing: ZN-ZP polishing cloth + 0.05 μm SO-T401 polishing suspension
