Chalcopyrite ore is a type of ore containing chalcopyrite, with the main component being chalcopyrite (chemical formula: CuFeS₂). The theoretical composition includes 34.56% Cu, 30.52% Fe, and 34.92% S. It usually also contains trace elements such as Ag, Au, Tl, Se, Te, and is mostly a mechanical admixture. Sometimes it also contains Ge, Ga, In, Sn, Ni, Ti, Pt, etc.
Copper ore is the main raw material for copper smelting. Through mainstream technologies, it is particularly suitable for high-sulfur ores, and can simultaneously recover sulfur (for making sulfuric acid) and precious metals through pyrometallurgical smelting or is suitable for low-grade or highly oxidized chalcopyrite, especially in wet smelting processes in regions with strict environmental requirements. It can extract copper metal from chalcopyrite ore, which is used for manufacturing wires, cables, pipes, instruments and meters, mechanical parts, etc. In addition to copper, iron and sulfur can also be extracted from chalcopyrite ore. At the same time, the trace precious metals such as gold and silver contained in the ore can also be recovered during the smelting process. Chalcopyrite is extracted through the entire process of “preparation - smelting”, not only providing more than 90% of the copper resources worldwide, but also simultaneously recovering various precious metals and chemical raw materials. It is one of the key minerals supporting the modern industrial system.
The following are the sample preparation parameters and microscopic effect appreciation of chalcopyrite samples:
- Grinding: sandpaper P400 - P2500
- Coarse polishing: SC + 3μm polycrystalline
- Final polishing: SC + 1μm polycrystalline
